The Lucky Ones
I thought I was supposed to die. I shouldn't be walking. I’m already dead inside. Every thought brought Ann closer to madness. The images of the fire on the plane were engraved in her head, the smell of burning flesh clung to her body, and so was the doubt that she was supposed to be alive.
“Ann?” her therapists asked, “Are you listening? I know you've just gone through a traumatic event, but please try to help me understand what is going on in your head.”
What was Ann going through, she didn’t even understand. How could she possibly make her therapist understand what was going on in her head?
“Even if I told you, it would be impossible to understand,” Ann said anger dripping on every word, “You never went through this. You never-” Dong Dong.
“Well our time is up Ann,” her therapist exclaimed, “I'll see you in a few days. And this time, Ann, do come with something to talk about. You don’t have to be so accusing.”
What had I accused my therapist of? The fact that she will never understand what happened to me?
Ann got up and left, leaving the awkward conversation behind her. If only she could leave the events at the door too.
It was a warm summer day, everything was perfect. Ann, Brian, Allison, and Jeff were all set to leave their small town and head to New York. The luggage had been packed days prior and was smoothly loaded into the plane. The flight was not delayed, which was a surprise for the group. Everything was perfect, too perfect. The group loaded the plane. Ann sat with Brian and Allison, while Jeff had to sit four rows behind them. Ann never predicted a storm, so the plane could never have taken the strike of lighting on its left side, which caused a fire in the engine and the chaos that would ensue. The plane cabin had gotten a huge hole in the side, the air was sucked out. Jeff died on impact, he had been plugging his phone in when the electric current went through the plane electrocuting him instantly. People looked as if they were jumping out of the plane like they had parachutes, but they were being tossed out. Allison was hit on the head when the plane made a jump forward after impact. Ann was told Allison was in a coma and was in the hospital because of it. Brian was crushed between the row of seats in front of him colliding under the pressure in the cabin. Brian was paralyzed from the waist down. Ann was lucky. She had been pushed between the aisle and passed out. She woke up in the hospital to all of this information and the images of the people crying. Somehow she had lived. Out of the 363 passengers who were on the flight, five survived. The other two also didn't make it out well. One had third-degree burns and had to have his burns scraped off hourly so an infection didn't spread. The other had lost an arm and had a broken pelvis. Ann was lucky.
Ann snapped out of her daydream, or rather,  the nightmare. She had to focus on the task at hand--going to see her friends that could only wish to be in her position. The hospital was only a block ahead. She stopped on the corner and the crosswalk light changed. Then proceeded to walk to the hospital. Once inside she was approached by a nurse.
“Hi, are you looking for a patient’s room?” the nurse asked, “Or is there something else you need?”
“Y-yes, I-I’m looking for Brian Smith and Allison Carl.” stuttered Ann, “They should be in the ICU, b-but I could be wrong.” The nurse waved Ann to follow her. The nurse sat at her desk and looked up the names Brian and Allison.
“Brian is in 309 in the ICU, but it appears Allison’s family has moved her into the Trauma ICU which is on the 11th floor in room 113,” the nurse said.
Ann was in a rush to see her friends so she left without saying thank you. So Ann went into the elevator, which traveled very unsteadily. As she reached the 3rd floor the elevator shook as it opened.
She walked to room 309, and saw Brian laying his bed. He appeared to be half here and half gone. His legs were covered with a thick blanket. Ann immediately became overwhelmed at the site of Brian. Should she really have gone to see him? She was the lucky one of the group, she made it with only a few scratches. Would Brian be jealous of her or be mad at her? Just do it, Ann! He won’t be mad at you.
“Hi Brian,” Ann said quietly, so she would not disturb him.
Brian turned his head and saw Ann. A smile immediately stretched across his face. “Hey Ann, it’s good to see you! How have you been?”
Ann was baffled by his kindness since she thought he would be mad at her. “I’m good. I came to see you and Allison.”
“ Oh, can I come up with you to see her, I haven’t been able to leave this room. My parents won’t take me anywhere and I'd Really like to go and see her.” Ann nodded. Brian pressed a button by his bed and a few moments later a nurse came rushing in.
“Is everything alright Brian?” the nurse talked fast, in a worried state, “Do you need to go? Do you need some meds-”
“Donna, I would just like my wheelchair, I’m going to visit a friend,” Brian laughed.
“Oh, of course, I will get you that right now,” stated the nurse Donna who looked relieved. She pulled a wheelchair out of the closet and brought it to his bedside.
Brian then pulled off the covers and to Ann’s surprise, his legs were still there and looked normal. Brian then lifted himself off the bed and sat in the wheelchair.
“Are you ready to go Ann?” Brian asked.
“Yeah, let’s go,” Ann said. Brian and Ann went to the elevator and got in. Ann pressed the 11 button and assigned to the 11th floor.
Once there Ann and Brian walked to room 113. Allison was laying on a bed.
“She looks at peace,” Brian sighed wheeling his way over to her, “Do you think she can hear us?”
“Yeah probably,” Ann replied. Brian and Ann sat there in silence for 10 minutes just looking at Allison.
A nurse rushed in and looked frantically around the room. “Brian you need to take your medications now!” It was Donna.
“That’s my cue to leave,” Brian said as Donna grabbed his chair and wheeled him out, “Bye Ann and Allison.”
Ann sat in the room alone with Allison then and did not know whether to leave or not, “I’m sure you're mad that I’m here. I’m okay and you're in this coma! I’m such a terrible friend, I should never have come to see you,” Ann got up to leave with tears in her eyes. She was almost at the door when…
“Ann is that you?” A voice came from behind Ann. Ann quickly turned around and saw Allison sitting up in bed.
“Allison!” Ann shouted running over to Allison's side, “I was so worried about you, I thought you were dead!”
“No I feel fine, but where am I?” Allison asked confused as her eyes darted around the room.
“Allison, you're in a hospital,” Ann swallowed the lump in the back of her throat, “There was a plane crash and-”
“And you blame yourself for being okay?” Allison questioned, “Ann I could hear you talking, I am happy your alive and okay. I would never have wished for you to be in a coma. It means so much to me that you came to visit me.”
“You really mean that?” Ann questioned, “I’m okay and you were left in a coma. How can you not be mad?”
“Ann I could never be mad at you,” Allison stated, “You’re my best friend and I know it wasn’t your fault the plane crash happened.”
“Yes, but-” Ann started.
“No buts! I’m just happy you're alive and well,” Allison stated, “I should probably call some nurses in here so I can get some tests done. Thanks for coming to see me.” Allison pressed a button on her bed to get the nurses and a flood of nurses came in to ask if Allison was okay.
Ann wasn’t listening or watching any of the commotion going on. Instead, she walked out of the room with a smile on her face. Ann then no longer blamed herself for the crash and realized that her friends were not jealous of her, but were happy that she was okay and  realized she wasn’t the only lucky one.

I was inspired by many things for this work, such as the movie Sully, and even one of my favorite horror movies Final Destination, although it has nothing to do with the horror movie. It is overall based on what I've learned in life about friends love
