I was 12 years old during that summer

My life used to be a big fat bummer

I was a lot different then

But I had my dad and step-mom there

I felt as if I had a life again

My mother taught me to lie,

To her it seemed like a piece of pie

This was when I was younger

I was a child who hated themself

One thing I know is that I was never in hunger

My life over that summer was memorable

I really didn’t feel as horrible

I had two sisters instead of just a stupid ol’ brother

My parents were there for us to talk

That was like the key to my lock

With my mother, talking to the ad-litem was weird for me

I knew she would hear it in the case and use it against us if you see,

Like when Sara

I was 12 years old during that summer

My life used to be a big bummer

I was a lot different then

But I had my dad and step-mom there

I felt as if I actually had life again

My biological mom taught me to lie,

To her it seemed like a piece of pie

This was when I was younger

I was a child who hated themself

One thing I know is that I was never in hunger

My life over that summer was memorable

I really didn’t feel as horrible

I had two sisters instead of just a stupid ol’ brother

My parents were there for us to talk

That was like the key to our lock

With my mother, talking to the ad-litem was off for me

I knew she would hear it in the case and use it against us if you see,

Like when Sara says why don't you tell them the truth?

We finally told her just that when we got here

That was a memory is still as sharp as a dog-tooth

When it's time to go back for mothers half of that summer,

Like Sara says again, I wanna see you be brave,

We tell our parents of how we were scared to go back

We felt as if she would give us a verbal attack,

Immediately there was an emergency trial

We talked to the ad-litem and were allowed to stay for the rest of that summer

says why don't you tell them the truth?

We finally told her just that when we got here

That was a memory is still as sharp as a dog-tooth

The author's comments:

I originally made this for an assignment in one of my classes and it was supposed to be based on the song "Be Brave" by Sara Bareilles. The poem is also based on a real event in my lifetime from the year of 2021. This poem can be pretty confusing to follow so I'll give you a guide. Each stanza goes back and forth from my life with my mother and my life with my step-mom and my dad. Thank you for reading this, Zoe.
