Don't Be Fooled
Height can be the defining factor for a guy.
For me, it’s where the conversation goes awry.
They laugh; they jest; they tease; they scoff.
And let me tell you, it can tick me off.
Picture a defender in soccer, what do you see?
I guarantee for most it ain’t me.
But on the field, my power and skills rule the day.
My opponents have had to learn this the hard way.
My name is Luka, and I am a whopping 5’4.
And I’ve been down this road before.
The opposition thinks that they will win.
But I’m tougher and faster, so let it begin.
We look at each other, eye to eye.
Right away he laughs and says: “I don’t even have to try.”
One minute later he receives the ball.
He tries to beat me, but then he just stalls.
He tries to push me, attempting to show he’s strong.
I do the same thing back to tell him he’s wrong.
He can’t believe what has happened.
My superior strength makes his confidence flatten.
I steal the ball and regain possession.
For the rest of the game, I keep up that aggression.
I smile at him as if to say:
“Let’s go, bud. I can do this all day.”
This situation has occurred a hundred times before.
And each time I have added to my score.
I’ve gotten used to the mocking of my height.
But let’s just see how they do in a real fight.

I am a freshman in high school, but my height is often compared to a kid in middle school. Whenever people see me, they automatically start talking about how weak I am. I'm always asked how much I can bench, and when I tell them the answer, they think I'm lying. It's the same on the soccer field. I may be the smallest on the field, but I am never being pushed around. I hope that others will be able to read this poem and have it resonate with them, helping them realize that it doesn't matter what others think because they don't truly know who you are.
