Where I'm From
I am from tiny pumpkins, Pokemon,
And Jiffy cornbread mix
I am from Nana’s baked chicken and rice, yams too,
just trying to get my fix
I am from a catholic-baptist hybrid household,
And becoming agnostic later on
I am from a hardworking mother,
Who persists for us, graceful as a swan
I am from being either the darkest white, or the palest black
Not being either full pigment, feeling like there is something I lack
I can’t help feeling out of place, at either family gathering
I wonder if they notice it too, amongst their incessant chattering
I am from two redhead twins,
Always keeping the house active
From being the darkest of my friends,
And wondering if I could be perceived as attractive
I am from my mother’s chicken soup,
And my other’s love for ball
I’m from all the love from both households, helping me stand tall.
