Captive Desire

careful tiptoes swirled in lilacs
like childhoods woven in your fingers
and lovers lost among train cars.
heat sweltered behind delicate eyes,
regret lining soft lips.
charcoal burned into palms,
smudged across lips.
before the sun retreats
a summers day with a book of trophies,
empty ribs with nothing to hold,
no cage for “love” to beat within
as a bird with broken wings.
