The topic of discussion today is the fast-paced film adaptation of ‘Sherlock Holmes’, produced by BBC and Hartswood Films from 2010 to 2017. However, Sherlock has been solving mind-boggling conundrums long before 2010. The original novels of Sherlock Holmes were first authored by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the late 19th century.

This contemporary tale of felonies and infractions follows Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), assisted by his comrade Doctor John Watson (Martin Freeman) solving astonishingly vexing enigmas at every turn. The anterior written pieces transpire in the late 19th century, while this notoriously enigmatic TV series occurs present-day, in the heart of London.

As you can imagine in a contemporary era, such as ours, there have been numerous aberrations made from the original content so as to ‘keep up’ with ever-changing societal norms. One of such examples is the limited censorship of narcotics. During the Victorian period, the usage of so called ‘panacea’ was commonplace, while nowadays it is often restricted or illicit. Due to this, Sherlock’s original habit of variegated narcotics has been restricted to lesser versions such as nicotine patches.

What truly appealed to me is how the adventures of Sherlock Holmes have stood the test of time and managed to come out victorious. I theorise that Sherlock Holmes’ longevity predominantly relies on the adaptability to each generation. The addition of modern technology has been implemented in a manner that the original content remains much the same, whereas machinery manages to contribute to the plot to such a degree that it seems initially penned in the aforementioned fashion.

Although there have been plentiful changes made since the original narrative, the prevalent plot has remained homogeneous. This contemporary adaptation of the original works has shown that even in this modern era, some old-fashioned sleuthing could never go amiss.

This adaptation of the wondrous adventures of Sherlock Holmes is quite frankly astounding. How the producers managed to make such bewildering chronicles come alive is staggeringly breathtaking. From mature teens to middle-aged men, I highly recommend this series to anyone scouring the internet for a thrilling and utterly spellbinding serial.
